“Les Enfants de Seattle” is a French immersion preschool, dedicated to immersing children ages 2 ½ to 5 in the French language, culture & academic tradition. Creating a positive, enriching environment filled with choices and physical activities is our mission.  Our school is child centered.  We teach about French culture by having children partake in the music, food and traditions of France.  We welcome your interest and look forward to meeting your family.

I am proud to announce the opening of Les Enfants de Seattle. Seattle is a vibrant, intellectual and passionate community. “Les Enfants de Seattle” fits right in.

My parents were born in small villages in the Basque Country of France. As adults, they immigrated to the Los Angeles area where they opened a restaurant and raised my sisters and me. Growing up, we regularly visited our relatives in France, often touring Paris as well. Being raised bi-culturally was an interesting experience. I didn’t realize how different it was until I began staying the night over at American friends’ homes. I now have dual citizenship: USA and France.

As an undergraduate at Scripps College in Claremont, California, I had the fortunate opportunity to study at the Sorbonne University fall semester 1989. This experience allowed me to truly immerse myself in classes and activities about French history and culture. I’ll never forget the art history class excursion to the Louvres or traveling to Berlin on a last minute planned week-end excursion because the Wall had come down. After receiving my B.A. in History, I went on to earn a Masters degree in Education at UCLA. The UCLA area was a mecca for children who spoke Spanish as their native language. I was saddened that there was only one truly bilingual school in the LA area. By a bilingual school, I mean where native speakers learned, interacted, studied with non-natives so that after so many years (usually by fourth grade) both are fluent in the two languages. After earning my M.A., I moved to the Seattle area and taught fourth through eighth grades for almost a decade. Then I entered the Danforth Program in University of Washington. This is where I earned my Educational Leadership certificate and administrative credentials. I’ve worked as an assistant principal at Madrona K-8, Eckstein & Washington Middle Schools. From 2001-2004, I served on the board of the French American School of Puget Sound as well as president for the Seattle Basque Club (www.seattleeuskal.org).

Meanwhile, many changes occurred in my personal life. I  have four children. My eldest, Alexandria, attended the French American School of the Puget Sound. It was this wonderful experience that truly honed her ability to speak French fluently. As an educator, the hands on, thought provoking curriculum impressed me as well. In 2005, my son, Jean Mikel, was born. Now I had the forethought and energy to always speak French with him. I believe it’s very important to speak a different language at a very young age, when the brain is growing at such a rapid pace; this is a critical time to take advantage of the pliable conditions of the brain. Then August 2006, Patxi & Elisabeth Maitexa were delivered. Yes, twins! My husband and I were elated and shocked when we found out we were expecting twins, instead of a singleton, but life deals you cards that you sometimes can’t predict.

Mes parents sont nés dans le pays Basque, du côté français. A l’âge adulte ils ont immigré près de Los Angeles où ils ont ouvert un restaurant et nous ont éduquées mes sœurs et moi. En grandissant nous avons rendu visite à notre famille en France en faisant le plus souvent possible un détour par Paris.

Grandir en ayant deux cultures est une expérience très intéressante. Je n’avais pas réalisé à quel point c’était différent jusqu’à ce que je passe la nuit chez des amis américains. J’ai aujourd’hui  la double nationalité : française et américaine.

En tant qu’étudiante à Scripps College à Claremont en Californie, j’ai eu l’opportunité d’étudier à la Sorbonne pendant un semestre en 1989. Après avoir reçu mon B.A en histoire, je suis allée préparer un master en éducation à UCLA. La structure de UCLA est faite pour les enfants de langue maternelle espagnole.  Jai pu constater avec tristesse qu’il n’y avait qu’une seule école bilingue aux alentours de Los Angeles. Par école bilingue j’entends le fait que deux personnes de langues maternelles différentes se rencontrent et étudient ensemble et qu’au bout d’un certain temps (généralement après le CM2) les deux parlent très bien les deux langues.

Après avoir obtenu ma maitrise (M.A), j’ai déménagé à Seattle où j’ai enseigné pendant 8 années, de la sixième à la troisième, de nombreux sujets. J’ai ensuite intégré le programme Danforth à l’Université de Washington. C’est là que j’ai obtenu mon certificat en direction et administration scolaires.

 J’ai travaillé en tant qu’assistant principal à Madrona K-8 et à Washington Middle School. De 2001 à 2004 j’ai participé au Bureau de la French American School of Puget Sound en tant que Présidente du Club Basque de Seattle (www.seattleeuskal.org).

Ensuite de nombreux changements apparurent dans ma vie personnelle. J’ai aujourd’hui quatre enfants. La plus âgée, Alexandria, a étudié à la French American School of Puget Sound: cette merveilleuse expérience lui permet aujourd’hui de parler français couramment. Mon fils Jean Mikel est né en 2005. J’ai alors pris la décision de toujours lui parler en français. Je pense qu’il est très important de parler une langue étrangère dès le plus jeune âge, lorsque la mémoire forme ses bases. En Aout 2006, j ‘ai donné naissance à des jumeaux: Patxi et Elisabeth Maitexa. Mon mari et moi furent très surpris lorsque nous avons appris la nouvelle mais la vie nous réserve beaucoup de surprises !
